CANCER HEROS

Kid of the month is a new feature of the Paul Black website that acknowledges a specific child battling cancer. All children who go through this terrible disease are heroes in their own way. Paul though that it would be a good idea to share some of their stories, so that you can capture the essence of what childhood cancer can do to both the child and the family.

At the age of 4, Eden began to limp, after running a fever that would not go away for two days, we took her to her doctor. Concerned, he admitted her to Children's Hospital of Columbus, Ohio. After a solid week of testing we got the news on July 16, 2004: Neuroblastoma Cancer. Neuro- what? Treatment was planned and surgery to remove the tumor was done on July 20, 2004. After six rounds of chemo, a stem cell transplant, radiation and Accutane, Eden has been declared NED (No Evidence of Disease). Treatment is hard on these kids, Eden has permanent high range hearing loss (necessitating hearing aids), numerous scars (inside and out) and many fears and insecurities. She has also gotten to meet hundreds of people that she counts as friends. At present, Eden is a happy five year old enjoying kindergarten and being free.
